The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art was opened to the public on October 3, 2003.[2] The art museum has a gallery, a large lobby and terrace for hosting events, a cafe, a gift shop, and a lecture hall. There is a sculpture trail that loops around the pond in front of the museum. The sculptures change periodically.
The university art collection began in 1948 when the collection Advancing American Art was purchased at a War Assets Administration for $1072 by Frank Applebee to be used as examples of art for students and faculty.[2][3] In 1998, this collection was valued at over $2.9 million.[4]
The museum's 1072 Society was formed in 2008[2] to acquire art. Each year, members each pay $1072 into a fund which is then used to purchase art for the museum. It's name refers to the original art purchase by Frank Applebee.
The building was designed by Bill Jordan, an architect with Gresham, Smith & Partners in their Birmingham, Alabama office. The interior designer was John Beason of Gresham, Smith & Partners.
The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is serviced by Tiger Transit by the East Parking - AU Hotel line. It only stops here from 12:45 pm - 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday, when classes are in session.[5]
